Split Open Battery
Split Open Battery

MacBook Pro 17-inch battery which has failed due to case popping open when in situ in the Mac. Luckily no harm done to the laptop which still works on mains power. 18 months old, the battery was replaced for free under the AppleCare Protection Plan. Since then the internal DVD/CD burner has also been replaced under the AppleCare Warranty. AppleCare is definitely worth the money IMO.
Recalibrating MacBook Battery

Received a replacement MacBook Pro battery from Apple. Remembered that when you get a new laptop Apple recommends that you calibrate the battery first. Here is how I did it: MacBook Battery Calibration.

This happened to my buddy’s 17 inch MBP about 6 months ago. Gotta love battery swelling, huh?
Mine didn’t swell, but produced some interesting back residue. Two batteries did this, but the third one worked (they couldn’t find anything wrong with the laptop either).
All verrrrry strange.
The small print says designed in California and made in China. I’m guessing that the quality control in the factory is not all that it could be – particularly with respect to component chemicals used in creating the battery compounds.
Guess if you use the MBP with almost no ventilation underneath it, it gets even more hot than normal. I suggest one of those Griffin Technologies stands (which I’ve bought one but can’t remember its name).
They at least help keep the air flowing all around the MBP. Plus its nice to have the screen higher.
I agree about having it higher, but with all the connections coming out the two sides this makes for an impractical workspace arrangement. I guess the day is fast coming when solid state flash memory will make the HDD and DVD/CD obsolete thus making the whole thing run cooler, and use way less power.
