A Jesuit uberGeek Thanksgiving! – ‘gadget’ 130 – Gateway EC14 “The UnNetbook”
www.thetechstop.net So… you like the size and price of a netbook, but you’re not overly thrilled by its anemic power and surprisingly short battery life. — You’re not alone… Though the netbook craze has been a collection of some great, not-so-great, and downright ugly design, there have emerged a few universally felt notions about netbooks: First, they’re good for word processing, websurfing and email… but not much else. Second, for such small computers, they’re 3-4 hours of battery life is a puzzlement. Well Gateway might have something for those who look at netbooks and say, ‘meh.’. Their new EC1400 series of notebooks has the size, weight, style and price of a netbook, but the power of a notebook. With a 11.6″ screen, 3GB of memory, dual-core CPU, 320GB hard drive and an incredible 8-hour battery life, this might be the cure for your netbook blues. www.Twitter.com

that review was the best review i have seen for a netbook/ laptop/ notebook. amazing job my friend.
killingfield1975,
.
Glad you like it. It really is quite a sweet little machine. Sometimes I wish it had a discrete GPU, but then that would have shortened the phenomenal battery time.
.
Like you, the first thing I do when I get ANY new PC is to remove all the preinstalled software. I don’t mention it because it’s a common thing to ALL computers we review.
.
In any case, enjoy and thanks for watching. (Gateway didn’t let us keep it… but I bought one for personal use!)

gadgettts,
I bought one! I been searching for a while for something like this. I wanted something netbook size but packed with a little more power. I am very surprised how fast this little proc can chug along.
I also want to include that I used pcdecrapifier to remove all the unwanted crapware that was included.
i’ll be dual booting Win7 and Linux on this system.
By the way did Gateway allow you to keep the reviewed EC1430u in your video? I hope they did = )
Thanks x10000
Magnetorhelogical,
I asked… we’ll see if they deliver.

killingfield1975,
Absolutely… it uses a standard 2.5″ SATA drive. As long as your SSD fits that form factory, you’re good to go!

Thanks for the review. This UnNetbook seems to fit the bill quite nicely, and I’ll be buying one. Glad to see someone doing a proper review!
can you upgrade the hard drive to SSD hard drive?
hey, have you tried the newer LT series? (the lt 21xx series with the N450) If you have, can you review it? I can’t seem to find a decent review for it.
thanks.
fickle09,
Nice tip! — We haven’t had one of those through the lab yet… I’ll look forward to a review unit!

Get the Gateway EC 1440U. It has a graphics card (unlike most netbooks) making it gaming-capable
wargamemaster,
This would DEFINITELY not be a gaming laptop. The use of integrated video pretty much nixes hard core gaming every time.

Ratherpuzzling,
Thanks for the comment… and if you’ve seen any of our CES coverage, it was ALL rendered on our loaner EC1430u. 1080p AVCHD video files all processed on a notebook the size of a netbook… not bad!

great review. thanks.
im looking for a good gameing laptop and im interested in gateway is this laptop good for gaming or the EC5809u or another laptop
10:50 gobble gobble?
Ooh.. thank youu very much Fr. Robert
and Happy Holidays ! I think i’ll enjoy this notebook very much.
sweetplumpy,
The camera does 640×480 — A bit on the low end, but pretty standard for non-HD videoconferencing. It doesn’t compare to the iSight, but I’ve never used a Sony Motion Eye.
.
Bottom line: Integrated is fine for general use, but if you want quality video, go for an external USB camera like the Logitech Pro9000 (also reviewed on ‘gadget’).

sweetplumpy,
No… the EC1437 has the footprint of a netbook, but it has laptop power. (Hence the “UnNetbook” moniker) — It does Photoshop, Word, AIM, Premier and pretty much anything else you can run on a mid-range notebook. (The video is a bit weak, so no gaming, but the CPU has plenty of punch.)
.
Peace,
Fr. Robert
wait! is the Gateway® EC1437u a netbook ?!?!
i mean can u use Photoshop and Word and Aim and things on it ??
GREAT REVIEW. was helpfuul and convinced me that i made the right choice by purchasing the cherry gateway ec 11.6 inch. was unsure since it lacked an optical drive but it was not necessary.
**BUT I have one question..! What about the performance of the webcam b/c that is important to me. How many megapixels is it?How is the quality during video conferences? And how does it compare to other webcams such as iSight in the mac or motion eye in the Sony vaio?
GOLDHEART,
Thanks for watching and commenting. Lemme see if I can answer some of your concerns.
There are only two sizes of the EC series. The EC54/58 is the 15.6″ 5lb unit, and the EC14 series is the 11.6″ <3lb model.
The EC14 DOES come in CPU configs from a Celeron to the dual-core SU, but all EC14 models are the same size and weight, that is to say, they are the same size as a 11.6″ LT Netbook.

Fr. Robert
my only beef with this review is that it boasts dual core and dualcore-speeds for startup times ect. on the first part of the review yet you stress the convenience of size comparing it with a netbook on the second part. The smaller version of the ec14 only comes with a single intel celeron processor which can be misleading for viewers
