Great review 5+ rating,very clear! thanks man!
Hey, was wondering if you could tell me if the keys on the keyboard on this laptop are removable, so, for instance, you could alter a foreign keyboard to a QWERTY by manually moving the keys around. Hope you can help, and many thanks!
How would you go about putting an SSD into this even?
@MYsterYmarcus Well, it would have been nice because the laptop isn’t ugly but its not pretty. Its just blah. I like their models with the bush aluminum look. Maybe the silver looks better. Also it should be noted that the standard battery (4CELL) is only good for ~3hr battery life so you really need 8CELL which adds bulk/weight.
@generation159 So you want the laptop to get thicker just so it can have backlit keyboard for impressing others?
@MYsterYmarcus Of course I can type without looking at the keyboard. I can type 100wpm or so. lol. Obviously I just want a backlit keyboard because it makes a laptop 100x flashier around other laptops.
.
@generation159 Why do you need a backlit keyboard? doesnt the screen illuminate the keyboard? Cant you type without looking at the keyboard?
does this have a backlit keyboard?
Why do you have to constantly remind me with you hand gestures that this is not an AMD model nor can I find any AMD model laptop on you website. Is this another case of Intel being an underhanded discount opportunity giver?
+1 for great unboxing commentary.
What Asus REALLY needs to address is the placement of the right Shift key. It’s still awkwardly placed.
@zendoren +1 for no SSD
Right now SSD are still new enough to where the have a fairly premium price. If you want a SSD, your much better off being left to be able to pick one out that is going to meet your performance, capacity, and price needs, and just install it yourself
@phorcep That’s because Macbook is superior in everyway!!! /sarcasm.
2.1 rating? whats that for?
@NeverLostYou Available at amazon.com and cdw too. Just ordered mine!
On previous version (U35jc) i? had a problem like that “high pitched whining noise that the computer makes when it is idling or near idling. Based on other user’s comments, it sounds like the problem occurs when the laptop’s processor changes speed to save power. The change in power draw excites a number of components on the motherboard and causes the computer to make an aweful high pitched whine.”
Does U36jc have it?
@daniellis89
Yep. So that is why I am going to buy good SSD drive (OCZ Vertex2/Vertex3, Corsair F-series or Patrion Inferno) and I am not going to change my mind.
@lorjuo I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes 8+ gigs.
@Ethan314159 Yeah, I don’t why they keep the gloss… every reviewer on earth has been blasting gloss for the past year but noone heeds them…
@kamek1986
Umm, first gen EeePC had first gen “SSD” to stay very cheap. This is targeted at 1000+ USD market, if it were to have SSD option it would be very fast. The Momentus SSD is a very fast drive and uses premium NAND flash chips. The Seagate hybrid is known to be on par with a velociraptor from WD. It is a VERY fast drive. Unfortunately the fact that it has NAND flash onboard does not make it SSD since there are moving parts on the drive which makes it a Disk Drive.
@zendoren To be fair to Apple, their design is just as sleek, if not more so. The magnesium is better than aluminium, but the lack of unibody construction cancels that out. Along with the cheap, glossy plastic for the mouse buttons.
I would love this in a 14″ with sandy Bridge i5 and no dedicated graphics.
That should take care of speed, HD video, and very light gaming. $800-900 would be a nice price point too. Or less
The 10h battery life is for the large battery, i.e. the one that protrudes a bit at the bottom, raising the back of the laptop when placed on a surface. It seems the configurations in DK is either the i3 with the small battery and half the battery life or the i5 with the large battery and ~twice the battery life.
I’ve pre-ordered this back in December, and still waiting for it to be in stock. Disappointed with the fact that they’re still using the glossy plastic around the screen. Looks cheap.
Available now – you can buy it from excaliberpc. Just google it.
