This is the crashed super small hard disk drive of my VAIO TZ laptop. (I added the AA size battery just for scale purposes)
"Your data is unrecoverable" Two different professional technicians said!
I always advise my friends to frequently backup their data, and I did it myself too.
Fortunately I do backup twice a month, and I didn’t loose lots of information. But I lost all my photos from Gavkhuni swamp and Isfahan trip, in addition to Fatemeh’s photos and Somayeh’s photos.
Sorry Somayeh and Fatemeh…

This woman was sitting at an outdoor table of a small restaurant/coffee-shop on the west side of Columbus Avenue at 73rd Street. It’s the first time that I’ve seen anyone in this particular area (which is near a gym that I usually visit 2-3 times a week) with a laptop, and I was delighted to see that she had a Mac…. and not just any old Mac, but a Mac Powerbook. (But not a MacBook Air

**********************
This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan — between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
I don’t like to intrude on people’s privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they’re still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what’s right in front of me.
I’ve also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting — literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I’ve learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture … after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it’s pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.
For the most part, I’ve deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don’t want to be photographed, and I don’t want to feel like I’m taking advantage of them. I’m still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We’ll see how it goes …
The only other thing I’ve noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They’re probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I’ve photographed … but there was just nothing memorable about them.

I am sorry to hear that Hamed… I have suffered the same some six months ago… Fortunately I burn off complete sets of photos to DVD, but only the final, post PSD JPG’s. I lost all original RAWs, JPGs and PSDs.
So, after that painful lesson, I bought a WD external RAID. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It offers Raid protection (Mirroring the two physical 1TB drives, and so reducing the 2TB to ‘just’ 1TB, but still plenty of space to be able to archive every photo in RAW format.), it functions as a NAS, and best of all it uses the NAS capability to offer remote access even when your computer is off – providing your internet connection is ‘always online’ type.
@youngrobv: Thanks a lot. Fortunately I just lost last 3 days of my photographs archive. The worst thing to me is that Fatemeh and Somayeh lost last 3 days of their photographs too…

Sorry for the loss. I had a hard drive crash before also, and lost a lot of early photos of my kids, after my son was first born. Happened before I made a disc copied, so I know what it’s like.
This is scary, how do things like this happen? I read a review of a Vaio TZ with a SSD (solid state drive) and they couldn’t finish the review because it died on them suddenly.
Also read of someone losing all of his data when his hard drive just crashed, how does it happen? Only way to be safe is to always back your things up (but not on other hard drives because they will also fail??)

@Mahyar K: I know how to substitute the controller board of 3.5 and 2.5 inches hard disk drives. Even I know how to change the cylender motor of 3.5 inches ones. But you know, this is a 1.8 inches super slim HDD, which sounds like playing ping pong when I connect it to 3.3v power source. So I think the media is crashed, and it’s almost impossible to recover such a crash with less than 10,000$
BTW, thanks a lot for your suggestion Mahyar jan

i love the background
I have seen an adaptor letting you use 1.8" hard drives in desktop PCs or put it in an external enclosure as an external hard drive.
ouch. can’t wait for SSD to be the dominant form of storage
@YSC: Buy they are very sensitive to magnetic spaces!
@rahulnirmal2000: I didn’t hear about it yet. Note that these 1.8" HDDs are using 3.3v instead of 5v
@Reza Nasrollahi: I love your point of view!

Thanks! I would like to have gotten closer, and would like to have photographed her from several different angles … but then she would have noticed me, and the "moment" would have been lost. So it was the best I could do under the circumstances…
Hello Ed, Really love your photos! We used this lovely image on one of our posts here netwaveonlinescheduling.com/articles/?p=30with a link back to your flickr page! Thank you for adding this under the creative commons license!

wealthymum,
Thanks for your note; I’m glad you liked the photo.
As you may have noticed from the comments that I attached to the photo, above, it has now been published in eight different blogs (including yours). When I originally took the photo, it never occurred to me that it would become so popular…
Best wishes for success in your new job,

Hi Ed, great photos and really appreciate you linking back to those of us that use your CC shots.
Thanks! It’s also a good way for people to find your blogs and articles if they happen to stumble onto my Flickr photos first. And quite often (as is the case with this particular photo), it’s interesting to see the variety of different places where it has been picked up and published.
The woman in this photo is using a PowerBook G4 15" not a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro lacks vents on the sides and it also lacks an S-Video port on the right hand side, however the PowerBook in this photo has these two.
This image was great for a blog article I wrote about choosing an online school to attend. Check it out at onlinebachelorscourse.com/
Thanks for letting me know!
Thank you for posting this wonderful photo with a creative commons licence. Just wanted to let you know that I used it in my blog post today. mashby.com/?p=1494
Michael,
Thanks for letting me know — I’m delighted that you found the photo useful for your blog posting.
There is one tiny detail that I should mention, in the interest of versimilitude: your blog says that the woman you saw was typing on a Dell laptop. Blasphemy! As you can clearly see in my photo, the woman is typing on a Mac Powerbook. As well she should be — does she actually look like someone who would stoop to the degrading level of a Dell? Feh!
Ed
