Likely you have seen my new PELICAN CASE -- that case is big, heavy and IMHO also somewhat secure. But one thing it is not -- easy to carry and it is one big piece of equipment.

Faced with the death of my (old, heavy & big) laptop's battery and the prospect of hauling around an 8+lbs laptop + AC adapter combo, I switched to a much leaner & portable alternative. Not a real "netbook" -- noticeably bigger in all categories. Still smaller & cheaper than the 13" laptops, the smallest size I originally had in mind.
To me it seems this could be the beginning of a "long" travel-friendship. So far it performed well and fits into spaces I hadn't planned , making it even more portable.

.
Meanwhile, I've upgraded it with a $17 GPS kit (antenna & mapping SW) and external speakers for in-car navigation and better audio output. Plus a 12V-to-110V adapter for long distance (and also to recharge AA/AAA and Nikon batteries). And add to this a 2.5" ext. USB drive for backup ...

.
