Turn small home UPS into giant UPS
This is me turning a cheap “Ultra” UPS with I believe 7AH capacity, good for maybe 3 minutes of power, into a huge battery reserve. I put 2 80AH Nautilus deep cycle marine batteries on this thing and test it. I’m estimating it will give me at least 2 hours of uptime on my machine with no power supplied. All that was used were the 2 80AH deep cycle batteries, about 18 feet of 10 gauge stranded copper wire, a few wire caps, electrical tape, a wrench, wire cutters and a dremel just for making the hole in the plastic.

I limited myself to no more than 75% depth of discharge. Generally 1-2 hours was more than enough; a few times I had power outages while I was at work, and the batteries were more than enough for me to get home and safely shut things down.
During an electrical storm when a transformer blew, I switched to using just my laptop? and a CFL lamp – probably about 75W draw total.
How long back up are you getting with 2 80AH batteries?
in theory
80 * 24 = 1920 W
50% discharge = 1920/2 = 960W
Computer usage = 150W + 50W for table? fan. = 200W.
960/200 = about 6 hours of back up.
Another thing, when I was testing this it shut off on it’s own after about 15 minutes. It seems to have some kind of shut off. Did this happen for you? Is it a thermal shut? down? I did not have any fans or anything while testing. I turned it back on and it continued on for half an hour until I manually stopped it. If I can get this to work I estimate I’ll get about 6 hours. I might buy two more batteries to bump that up to 12. My server is old, if it stays off too long parts fail.
Are you still using this setup? How is it working out? I’m seriously considering it. I have the same UPS and two 100ah Nautilus batteries? I just bought. Trying to find an inverter-charger that switches in <10ms is very hard, so I decided to look at using a UPS. I heard the APC are bad to use since their float voltage is too high and kills batteries. (that’s why they only last a few years and want you to buy only their batteries… money)
Bro where to connect the line from the UPS to the PC for UPSMON software , I downloaded the UPSMON soft but I dont know where to connect the line for it in the UPS to PC , I? have microtek 600va UPS….the UPS has three big AC sockets and two RJ45 socket ..Is this two RJ45 socket is for connecting the UPS to PC for UPSMON software please explain ? Please upload some videos about this and about how to used the UPSMON software…
how to remove? the 5minute auto shut down timer on the ups?

Wet cell lead acid 12V batteries only give off hydrogen if the battery potential gets over 14V. Given that the batteries are being charged at less than 1A that will not? happen without another charger being connected to the battery

it stresses the charging components more, yes. there are things you can do, see above where? i mentioned using a shunt or adding a fan. you can also adjust what peak voltage is used. i’ve never had an issue in charging, the only issue i’ve ever had is when discharging for long periods of time, which is generally helped with nothing more than heatsinks and a fan.
there are a few things you can? do to improve quality. a shunt for the the batteries so charging stops when they are at 85%-90% will help, as well as lowering voltage and doing a slower trickle charge over time. it’s not unusual to see a few days of recharge time if you have a large battery set. also, a fan especially helps, for components like the transformer. also, i have found if you run on battery for long periods, the inverter components will also get very hot.
sure it works. i’ve already tried rhis thing but had problems bucouse the current needed from big batteries for charging was a lot more the one of 7amp batteries so after a couple of mounths i burnt the mosfet that rectify AC power line and there? is other problem i can’t solve.
The UPS chargers are designed for a gel cell battery NOT a wet cell deep cycle. The UPS function will function but trying to recharge? a wet cell battery of that size is definitely hard on the charger.

Hi, Nice job. What are people complaining about. With every experiment you learn and improve. Can you adjust the UPS software to allow for greater than 10 min operation? In my opinion a UPS is really just to give? you enough time to safely shut down your pc. I think your girl friend will be ok with the batteries as long as you get the chevy transmission out of the bath tube. Just kidding. I have an old belkin UPS I need to change the batteries on too.
Some UPS may have problem charging larger batteries (cannot? keep it fully charged).
Also may have problem with calibration.
what about the battery charger inside the ups small? ups have a small battery charger if you put big battery , while dischager and rechargeing time ups may dammage due to low capacity battery charger, modify the circute and put external charger with cutout relay system then system will work properly

I’m calling you? out claiming you have a diesel-powered generator that produces less noise than a PC, can be used under a desk indoors and, oh, since you’re talking about eco-friendly, burns biodiesel and produces no carbon emissions. I want to see the make, model, acoustic output, etc.
euh ??? from what planet are you.. the generator i have runs on diesel and the noise is lower then my pc…its a back up system that is also connected to solarpanels…for 300 dollar you have a system that could run for months…you can also connect a windmill thing to it..that generate just enough elect,? to run a pc… batteries are not realy friendly for the inviroment…thats why i dont get this clip… just for a few hours back up energy..

gas? is extremely expensive compared to electricity, gas degrades over time much faster than lead-acid batteries, gas cannot be stored indoors safely (lead acid batteries, if sealed, like AGM, can), generators cannot run 24×7 waiting for your equipment to fail, generators are extremely, extremely loud.
maybe you? should just use a generator? cost 55 euro gas is 1.8 euro a ltr…
and run you computer for days?????
