Hello, If you are close enough to a dealer it is? always recommended to use a BMW battery. However, you can purchase a good battery with a decent warranty from any part store such as Die Hard or Everlast. For this vehicle you will want the battery with higher CCA’s or cold cranking amps. This will hep on the cold days. Make sure it has a vent hole to prevent damage in the battery box and the vent is installed. I have video on what happens when the vent is left off. I hope this helps.

You can definately hook up a battery charger to an X5 at the battery or? at the jump terminals under the engine hood. Red = Positive

For an E53 no registration is required but for newer models the registration changes the way the engine computer charges the battery. The intelligent battery sensor (IBS) which is not in the E53 X5 only tells the engine the SOC or state of charge of the battery and monitors for a parasitic draw. If you have an E70 X5 that would be the reason for registering the battery. But I have? not had a customer have a problem that did not have this registration performed.
If the car’s computr is so intelligent, why can’t it tell by the new battery’s characteristics that it is a “new” battery? If it is an adaptive control system, why does? it have to be “told” a new battery has been installed? Curious, and in shock over $600 to change a battery at the dealer.
Hello, On your vehicle a radio code is not used. This was used on? E36 and Z4 vehicles. Disconnecting the battery will require you to reset the time and date but the radio should come on normally. If you have the code function this is actually to disable the vehicle when you are away and the code would need to be entered before the vehicle can be started. I would avoid using this function though as it is a pain when you forget the code

BMW has a test plan that needs to be run to register a battery. You would need a GT1 or a BMW ISID or be able to run ISTA diagnostics at your shop. Then under service functions select battery, registration and follow the test plan. For other vehicles to change from an white to black AGM battery programming is needed to tell the engine computer? how to tell the alternator how to charge. Over all though I have found it makes little difference to register or not to register

BMW actually recommends that you charge from the jumper terminals and I? do this all the time in my shop.
