Part1 – How to revive / rejuvenate / fix a bad rechargeable NiCd battery for cordless drill
** THIS WILL ONLY WORK FOR NICD BATTERIES – DO NOT DO IT TO NIMH OR LION ** This video will show you how to fix a bad or old NiCd battery for your cordless power tools. You need to have a power source that is double the voltage of your current battery. So if your battery is 18V, then you…

My zap method is to have a parallel power source to your battery. + of source to + of battery. Others have reported also doing? it with reverse polarity but I have not tried it and I don’t think it’s a good idea.
Great video I have? some old battery than you
some other video uses a welder, and their clamp happens to be +. So? they are zapping with the -.
Is there any particular reason you say to zap it with the +, or could you zap with either one?
could I use lithium batteries for the ‘charging Source’ ? to jump start dead? NiCads ?
This method is only good for fixing internal crystals that may have formed.? It’s possible the cells in your battery has other issues and cannot be fixed.
Just tried this on a Black & Decker firestorm 18v? NiCd battery that was said to be beyond use and would not charge by the B&D tool shed. I tried your technique but I used a 12v car battery charger. After a couple of goes my Multimeter showed 14v, I let the battery cool then tried to charge it but the charger started smoking. I stoped the charging process and the battery then measured 16.4v. I tried it in my drilling machine and it worked but the machine slowed down after about 10min. Any advice?
Thank you for posting the easy to understand video, forgot to? mention that
Thanks for sharing your? experience.
Just did this last night on my 18v Milwaukee Drill Battery, **EXCEPT I MADE IT EASIER** and just used the the battery that was still working to “jump” the dead one that the charger wouldnt recognize. + to? +, – to – taped it like in the video Easy, Let it cool for 15 mins, the charger finally recognized it and it worked great this morning.
You can probably jump any NiCd batteries and see if it will reviive it.? Just not NiMH or LiOn
Will this work? for old Sony video camera batteries?
Actually you can use 120 straight out of the wall socket to quickly “pop” your old NiCads. Although I recommend *EXTREME CAUTION* and safety measures? when doing this, and knowing exactly what you’re doing. The cells must be “popped” directly, NOT through an internal battery charging circuit! – I’ve literally put new and lasting life into countless old NiCads this way.
i have several dead ryobi batteries (same as you used for your power source), can i use li-ion? batteries as the power source ?
Wow series 2 chargers and it worked. Thats? great!
this worked dandyfine for my craftsman 14.4 batteries… i used 24 volts by putting two car battery chargers in series. Took about 20 seconds of zapping but did the? trick… Thanks cuz those batteries go for 60-70 bucks a pop!

On small rechargeable batteries for something like a phone or a kid’s rc car, you could simply do a quick high amp jolt at normal charge voltage. If your phone battery pack is x2 (1.2v x2) nimh or nicad batteries (600 to 900mah) then? a quick 2 or 3 amp jolt of 2.4 to 3 volts will be enough to gain back a lot of your old battery’s life back. It’s not necessarily a requirement to double the voltage.

A higher voltage/higher amperage jolt on batteries can? be good to get rid of crystal build up that blocks the current. The crystal build up acts as an added resistance or a choke on the current flow. This isn’t true of just nicad batteries, though.
1)? You *can* do this with NiMH. 2) You don’t need twice the voltage to jump start dead batteries.
The reason the charger wouldn’t charge those dead NiCad is because a lot of electronic chargers won’t output any current if they don’t receive any current. That is to say, if a 100% dead battery doesn’t send a signal (a current) to the charger, the charger won’t send current back. You could probably jump start dead batteries with a 6v lantern battery and you would have gotten the same effect.
My disclaimer in the description is to tell people not to try to revive a bad LiOn battery. As? to using LiOn as the power soource, I don’t know if it might damage the LiOn batteries. LiOn batteries are so expensive that I don’t want to be responsible to any damage that may incur when using LiOn as power source.
Can I? use my two Lion 18v batteries as the power source. It seems you are saying you can not “DO” this “TO” and Lion. Was wondering if the LION could be the source. Thanx… Pete
Good to hear you got new life out of? your batteries.
Thanks for sharing? your experience. Have a great day!!
Great video. I had 4 Ryobi batteries that would NOT charge. Two of them were probably 8? or 9 years old and were in my junk battery box. ALL 4 of them now work thanks to your procedure. Thanks. I really appreciate it and it saved me a bunch of money.
I didn’t even know this was possible. I had 2- six year old 18 volt black and decker batteries that would give me 3 minutes before the line trimmer would lose lot of its power. I did this jumpstart twice with one battery and once with? the other but with a diehard automatic battery charger. Now, they are giving me the usual 24 minutes trimming on a full charge for each battery. Rejuvenate six year old batteries to almost brand new?! Awesome! I almost was going to buy a new trimmer.
This is great IF you? happen to have spare batteries around…..
