It’s worth the extra dollar or two! I just replaced my Super Mario RPG save battery and had to re-solder the legs on the new battery which was really difficult and dangerous (considering the battery could have exploded/leaked). If you do go my route, make sure you have some soldering experience.

It’s just a black screen when you turn on the power to the SNES. All of my other SNES games work fine except for Super Mario RPG. Does this mean that the game is dirty or that the battery needs to be replaced? I tried cleaning it with alcohol and Q-Tips and it still will not work, just a black screen when? you power the game on.

A dead battery will load just fine but always show no saved data. Even if you just played and saved the only option will be “start new game” instead of load.
