Gav’s EV Conversion 14 – Installing the Batteries
Visit www.EVsecrets.com & grab my new EV Conversion book + video package! The batteries have arrived and are installed at long last! It took a few days of fiddling about but we installed and secured the front and rear batteries into place with super-strong stainless steel strapping. I also created and installed my sealed rear battery box which has the extraction system connected to the turbo timer and a relay so that both the ignition and the charging system activate the fans. The turbo timer ensures the fans keep going for 3 minutes after I’ve turned the car off, or unplugged the charger. It sounds complex but it isn’t. You have to remember it’s ME we’re talking about here ![]()

120%+ SUPER BATTERY LIFE! Learn about Laptop Battery Life at LaptopBatteryLife.com
nice im going to? do that to
I am going to? use lithium ion batteries do i still need to do that or is that only for deep cycle batteries like u have?
Psi I going to put my batteries in old area of the gas tank.?
My other goal is reylce a old sportcar and trubing in to EV? Car.
In later videos he shows how he made a vent tube with a fan that circulates the air.
It is all explained in future? videos.
Exactly, the batteries in front are free to “breath”, however the batteries in the back were not left on the open air, but contrariwise closed into a box — if they cause gas leak, then? batteries in front do the same — so covering the back batteries won’t stop the leak. I guess he covered them just so it looks fancy?
Because it already has a big hole outside where the engine used to? be.
When? you charge batteries there’s some gas leak ??? Why don’t you cover the front batteries also? hmm…
NiMH..would be great…if Chevron didn’t hold the patent?
Meticulous. It’s impressive.?
Well, Li-Po cells still will be way to expensive for the time being.? For example the pack giving you ~90 volt, with 500 Ah, will cost you approximately 30000 usd, the other thing – when you have ~100 kg of lithium behind your back it is like driving a bomb. So for now the optimal solution is Gel and AGM batteries.
This is all brillant, have you thought? about a conversion to laptop batteries though?
Range is still an estimate at the mo, I might get close to 60km if I drive it really gently? Time will tell.
The acceleration is superb and the top speed looks like it’ll reach 130km/h at this stage.
I’ll put the? vital stats up when it’s all legal.
Very slick installation – appears you have an ADC motor and Curtis? controller. What kind of range and top-speed are you expecting?
Yay! You’re almost there Gav! I’m so excited for you m8. Can’t wait to see it drive. Also looking forward to seeing how far you can go before you need a charge. When you do have that data could you please provide the details in US and metric? results? That would be super.
Great work on the video sound track too Gav.
Legendary. Keep up the good work.. nice to? see the weight’s not a worry.
Thanks folks! I would like to replace the shocks in the car.? There’s not enough battery weight in the back (115 kg) to install new springs but new shocks would make it feel less like a boat.
The straps on the batteries can be removed by undoing the clasps. I wouldn’t re-use the straps as it’s cheap and fast to to replace them with new ones.
I installed the longest length of cable last night too. Fits well so far!
nice work, very lucky guy I wish I had the money for an electric car.
thanks for showing us? all.
Sorry, Gav.. I must have missed that part, probably busy thinking about something you’d said earlier.. Or busy wondering.. Is he going to add ducting…
Those straps are permanent, right ?
They’d have to be cut and replaced to remove a? battery, or is there some way of releasing them and re-fastening ?
Yup, at the end of the video I mention that I’ll? be installing ducting to the outer vent on the side of the car. I’m hoping to do that this weekend.
Ooooohhhh… It’s getting TOOOOOOO exciting !!
This puzzles me though…
Put batteries in a box, seal box as per regs so that gas doesn’t vent into the boot… Then install fans to pull the? gas from the box into the boot ?? Eh ? Do I misunderstand ?
Or are you going to put some ducting to take the vented gas to the outside of the car ?
good? work been watching since first video and cant wait for test drive!!!!
Awesome!
Hopefully you can do a test drive this weekend
Keep us? posted!
You’re right, I’ve found that progress just flies when I stop waiting for tradesmen to build stuff… and when the bank lends me money!
I found the 2nd hand turbo timer on? TradeMe which is New Zealand’s “ebay”. Heaps of bargains on there for the financially strained Kiwis out there.
You’ve made some really great progress in the last few weeks,? I’m sure you’ll be really pleased once it is all working.
