Had a question could I conceivably use the same rig here to power my 450D? its not alot of information? out there to making ham’s completely portable.
Thanks for this very useful video. I’ll shortly be sitting my UK Foundation Licence and I’m considering an 857D as my first rig. Because I live in a flat (apartment) I’m looking to create a mobile/backpack rig that I can take up into the Scottish hills, so this video has given me some good ideas. I liked the way you explained everything really clearly, including all the little? details of your setup. Many thanks and 73′s. Charlie.
@USNERDOC, You have definitely? sparked the Ham Bug and I am actively working towards getting my Tech Class license. As a 30 + yr paramedic, USMC vet. and fellow prepper I have really enjoyed your channel, videos & Amp3 kits.. You’ve no doubt probably already seen it, but if not check out YT (drjet666) videos on his Yaesu 857D manpack radio set-up. It is slick, clean and way cool. Looking forward to making contact with you when I get a rig and license. Semper Fi and 73.
What is? the brand of your battery charger?
Awesome setup, gave me an? idea…. Thanks!
you said you’re not sure if its you or him who’s signal is breaking up. look at your signal from the repeater….full strength….so obviously his signal is not? making the repeater…
Good luck on your tech test!
Keep your powder dry and be safe.
73!?
Great setup and I am looking forward? to taking my tech test at the end of the month.

Very nice and informative video. I take my test this coming Saturday. Since I live in a trailer park, I’ve been wracking my brain and poring thru websites for portable antenna? solutions like you’ve shown here. I think I may give your tripod adapter a whirl. Thanks very much for posting this

hello is there a way? that i can make a portable version of the Yaesu FT-2900.
- Thanks!
What gauge wire and how many amps for the fuses?
12 ga wire – will have to check the fuse amp rating
How did you attach the? powerpoles to the back of the radio?
No, I used an extra proprietary plug (HRO) that then was hooked to Anderson PowerPoles
Did you have to make any permanent mods to the radio wiring?
No
Doc, great stuff as usual. What gauge wire and how many amps for the fuses? How did you attach the powerpoles? to the back of the radio? Did you have to make any permanent mods to the radio wiring?
- I will have to do some? testing for the run time on the 7a 12v SLAB. Bottom line will depend on percentage of transmit time which uses the most power compared with receive only mode. Yes, you can run the coax to a handheld and use a 12v car battery as a power source . . . something I have done many times.
@USNERDOC – Very nice portable setup. I have two questions for you. How long can your radio run on the 12 Volt 7 amp battery? Is it possible to plug in the coax cable for your antenna into a handheld or must it be used with a base station type radio? My reasons are because I am working on a budget and thinking if I can get a hand held for the car and use a large antenna when I am at home…until I can? afford a base station. Thanks in advance.
Yes . .? . working on that as we speak
hello. great video. ? are you planning a solar recharge setup?
