It means that one is thinking so much about far-away things that one pays no attention to any surroundings.

"Meditation" and "contemplation" are similar words in English, but they don’t convey quite the same meaning … in this case, you get the impression that you could walk up in front of this man, sing and dance, and he would pay no attention to you, because of whatever it is that he’s thinking about.
