All About Laptop Batteries
With the increased usage of laptop computers nowadays, the demand for laptop batteries have reached its peak. Laptop batteries are specific to the make and model of the laptop. There are lots of laptop battery manufactures like septechnologies who are capable of supplying batteries that are compatible with most of the laptops that are available in the market today. Though there are a lot of manufactures of laptop batteries, there are a few things that have to be taken into consideration while choosing a laptop battery.
ALL BATTERIES ARE NOT THE SAME
Most of the laptop users still believe that all the laptop batteries are the same. Though the laptop batteries work on the common principle that ‘electrochemical reaction created forces a stream of electrons that traverse from one position to another in the laptop batteries and the negative and positive terminals send and receive electrons’, there are also many differences between the laptop batteries that are available in the market today. To start with, the location and shape of different terminals of the battery may vary across different models. Moreover, there are three different types of laptop batteries that are available in the market today:
NICKEL CADMIUM BATTERIES
The Nickel Cadmium batteries were the ones used in laptops in earlier days. These batteries were preferred in earlier days as they delivered high output at low cost. However, these NiCd batteries have many drawbacks like overcharging, cell reversing, memory & lazy battery effects and dentritic shorting. Moreover, these NiCd laptop batteries are not environment friendly. Cadmium which is a very heavy toxic metal requires special care during disposal. With these difficulties taken into account, these batteries are not widely used today.
NICKEL METAL HYDRIDE BATTERIES
Nickel Metal hydride batteries are better replacements for NiCd batteries. These NiMH batteries are compatible with most of the older laptops. The elimination of the toxic cadmium in this type of battery makes it environmentally safe than the NiCd batteries. Also these batteries are easily available in the market for a cheaper price.
LITHIUM ION BATTERIES
The lithium ion rechargeable batteries are the type of batteries in which the lithium ion moves between the anode and the cathode. Lithium ion batteries are the most commonly used ones in consumer electronics. They are currently the most popular batteries that are used in most of the portable devices. These LiON batteries have excellent energy to weight ratio, no memory effect, and slow loss of charge when not in use. However, the unique drawback of the Li-ion battery is that its life span is dependent upon aging from time of manufacturing (shelf life) regardless of whether it was charged, and not just on the number of charge/discharge cycles. So an older battery will not last as long as a new battery due solely to its age, unlike other batteries. Though the LiON batteries have this disadvantage, the advantages overweigh them is hence it is most preferred laptop battery in use today.
If you are still not sure about what type of laptop batteries to choose, nothing to worry about. You can get the best batteries from experts like septechnologies. With all these kinds of laptop batteries, the industry is still hoping to find an alternative to maximize efficiency and to minimize cost.

All there is to know about Toshiba Laptop Battery Packs
If you are someone who cannot afford to stay away from your laptop and would like to carry it whereever you go, you might consider buying a external laptop battery pack for it. Not only do these battery packs provide additional battery power on the move but can also work as a Toshiba laptop battery replacement incase your original Toshiba battery is not working anymore. For people who are always on the run, these laptop battery packs can help to greatly increase their productivity and performance by providing enhanced battery power.
All Toshiba laptop battery packs consist of removable, rechargeable, Lithium ion battery cells (All Toshiba laptop batteries use Lithium ion battery cells). These battery packs can be interfaced with the Power Utility built on Toshiba notebooks helping one to monitor the remaining power. The battery packs have a good design allowing them to attach and detach to the laptop easily and quickly. The quality is similar to that of a battery for Toshiba laptop.
Numerous battery packs are available consisting of 6, 8, 9 and 12 battery cells. Below is a comparison of some of the features of these battery packs.
10.8V x 5800 mAh
10.8V x 4300 mAh

Depending on the user’s usage pattern, applications running on the system, power management capabilities of the system the recharge time and laptop battery life may vary. As is the case with all laptop batteries, the battery pack will also loose it’s capability to work at maximum capacity with time.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dell Laptop Battery
How long does a Dell laptop battery last? When should I consider replacing mine?
All rechargeable batteries wear out with time and usage. As time and cumulative use increase, the performance will degrade. For the typical user, noticeable reduction in run time generally will be observed after 18 to 24 months. For a power user, reduction in run time generally may be experienced prior to 18 months. We recommend buying a new Dell laptop battery when the run time does not meet your needs.
How long am I able to use my Dell laptop on a fully charged battery?
Many factors affect the amount of time that a portable computer battery can deliver power before it must be recharged. These factors include the configuration (processor, memory, etc.), types of applications being run and display brightness.
Dell uses industry standard benchmarks for battery run time claims. For more information on battery run times and benchmarks, the white paper, “Understanding Battery Life in Portable Computers” is available.
How do I charge my Dell laptop battery?
The battery charges in the laptop when the laptop is connected to an AC power source via the AC adapter.
How long does it take for a Dell laptop battery to fully recharge?
The charge time varies depending on the system. If the system supports ExpressCharge, the battery typically will have greater than 80% charge after about an hour of charging, and fully charge in about 2 hours with the system off.
Should I totally discharge, then recharge my Dell laptop battery occasionally to make it last longer?
No, discharging and charging does not increase the life of a Lithium Ion technology battery.
Can a Dell laptop battery be “overcharged”?
No, the battery is designed to stop using the charger when it reaches full charge.
Does Dell sell external battery chargers?
Dell offers a Datamation battery charger for large institution customers. The charger has 16 charge bays to charge batteries for Latitude D500/D505/D510/D520/D600/D610 laptop systems. The product can be found at www.exceldigital.org.uk.
Is it easy to install a battery?
Yes, very easy. First, make sure all open files are saved. Next, either attach the AC adapter directly to the laptop or set the system to “hibernate” mode or shut off. Release the latch on the current battery, and simply install the replacement battery.
Will Dell laptops accept non-Dell batteries?
Dell has a rigorous qualification process by which all Dell batteries are validated to ensure proper function, performance and safety. Some non-Dell batteries are available in the market with claims of compatibility with Dell systems. Dell cannot verify these claims, nor the safety of using them in a Dell system. Dell strongly encourages our customers to use only Dell laptop batteries advertised as appropriate for their laptop model. Only Dell laptop batteries come with a 1-year warranty, are engineered for optimal safety and performance for Dell systems, and are supported by Dell technical support for the length of the warranty period.
What is a modular bay battery?
In some laptop systems Dell offers a battery that can be used in the optical drive media bay (DVD/CD drive bay). This enables the use of two batteries, potentially extending the available run time.
If I install a modular bay battery, are my primary and modular bay batteries working at the same time to power my laptop computer? No, the modular bay battery is used first, then the system automatically switches to the primary battery. This is a deliberate design to allow the most amount of run time to remain in the primary battery in case the modular bay battery is removed and replaced with an optical drive.
What does Dell recommend for battery storage for a long period of time? When storing for more than 4 days these guidelines can better preserve the life of your battery: Do not store batteries for long periods plugged into or attached to any power source. This includes AC adapters and laptop security carts plugged into an outlet.
Laptop batteries, including those stored in laptop systems, should maintain an Operational Storage Temperature of 0° to 35°C (32° to 95°F).
Batteries may be stored in the laptop or outside of the laptop.
Charge batteries before storing. The recommended charging time should not exceed 1 hour. Typically, this should charge the battery to between 80% and 100%. (Some discharge will take place over time. Stored batteries are expected to discharge 10-15% over a four month period, for your information.)
