We normally put these back on charge as soon as students return them. Over the summer we are running the batteries down completely before charging them again. We’ve recently regained this room which is being set up as a dedicated AV room with storage and charging of netbooks, laptops and ipads, along with a colleague’s digitisation project.

It’s finally more-or-less finished!
All I have left to do is fix the laptop-half onto the back of the frame more solidly and find some rubber feet so it doesn’t sit on the wall at a slight angle.
So glad I ditched the first attempt and used my other junker laptop instead, it’s worked out so much better and fits on the back of the frame in such a way that if I liked I could keep the battery and whatnot in and can keep the bottom half of the laptop shell on to protect all the bits. So nice.
It was running Twittervision but now it’s got surveillancesaver on it.

How to ‘Zap’ rechargeable batteries that are dead or will no longer charge. Be careful when doing this and be sure to protect yourself from the batteries in the event they rupture or explode. The video does not show it, but when I normally do this, I place the battery under a plastic container with a slot to touch the negative lead.

I have a few of these Neoware thin clients laying around ( www.flickr.com/photos/extraketchup/2292764032/ ), and because of their single 5 volt requirement and low power consumption, I figure they would be great for robotics projects and other such cool things!
With a power draw around 5 watts at idle, I can run this computer (sans case and P/S) off of 4 AA batteries!!
The unit comes with about a 130MB SSD (solid state drive), which isn’t much at all (it has old Win CE on it). However, I was able to get a bootable Linux install on it with various tools I would want for robotics (networking, Python programming language, USB storage, USB cameras, serial and parallel port access, etc.) I used Gentoo to fine-tune my install to this specific hardware.

Gav’s EV Conversion 14 – Installing the Batteries

Visit www.EVsecrets.com & grab my new EV Conversion book + video package! The batteries have arrived and are installed at long last! It took a few days of fiddling about but we installed and secured the front and rear batteries into place with super-strong stainless steel strapping. I also created and installed my sealed rear battery box which has the extraction system connected to the turbo timer and a relay so that both the ignition and the charging system activate the fans. The turbo timer ensures the fans keep going for 3 minutes after I’ve turned the car off, or unplugged the charger. It sounds complex but it isn’t. You have to remember it’s ME we’re talking about here
