Lenovo’s New Thinkpads Have Better Battery Life

Lenovo’s New Thinkpads Have Better Battery Life
Lenovo on Tuesday announced the first ThinkPad laptops running Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge chips, which help make the PCs faster and more power-efficient than older models.

The company’s new ThinkPad T, L and W laptops run on Intel’s latest Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, which were officially announced earlier this year. The power-efficiency features on Intel’s Sandy Bridge chips, combined with Lenovo’s new power-saving features, have helped prolong battery life on the new laptops, said Preston Taylor, ThinkPad product marketing manager at Lenovo.

The ThinkPad T420, which includes a 14″ screen, delivers up to 15 hours of battery life with a nine-cell battery, better than the 11 hours of its predecessor, Taylor said. The ultra-thin T420S, which also includes a 14″ screen, offers six hours of battery life on a six-cell battery, but users can extend that to 10 hours by plugging an optional battery in the optical bay. The ThinkPad T and W laptops provide a 33-percent battery performance improvement over previous models.

The laptop battery life is also boosted by Intel’s Turbo Boost 2.0 chip feature, where inactive cores can be automatically shut down to preserve power. Performance on the processing cores can be dialed up in case extra performance is needed for tasks like video rendering, Taylor said.

Some laptops are also bundled with Intel’s Core VPro hardware and software platform, which enables IT managers to remotely manage and secure laptops. Intel’s anti-theft technology, which is bundled in VPro, allows IT managers to remotely disable stolen or lost laptops over wired, Wi-Fi or 3G networks. The laptops can be later reactivated through a code provided by the IT department. A GPS capability in the anti-theft feature also allows laptops to be tracked, and establish boundaries so laptops are kept within specific confines.

The new ThinkPads will become available worldwide in March and include dual- and quad-core Core i3, i5 and i7 processors running at clock speeds between 2GHz and 2.7GHz.

The ThinkPad T420 and T420S are priced at $ 1,029 and $ 1,399, respectively. The T520 comes with a 15.6″ screen and is priced starting at $ 999. The laptops will support up to 8GB of RAM, and up to 320GB of hard drive storage.

The ThinkPad W520, which includes a 15″ screen, is priced starting at $ 1,529. The desktop replacement laptop weighs 5.95 pounds (2.7 kilograms), and supports up 32GB of memory. The laptop includes USB 3.0 ports and multiple storage options.

The new lineup also includes the L420 and L520 laptops, which are priced starting at $ 899.

It is an established fact for most electronic devices which boast of offering to get the job done with minimum effort at the least amount of time that this so called efficiency does not stay true if the battery is dead or empty. The advantages of technology work more effectively when the battery is up and at to support its functions. A weak battery for your laptop could be the thin line between failure and success in delivering that advertising presentation on that business meeting so be sure to take good care of your battery least you would want to be a soldier in battle who did not go through proper military training, now that would be disaster.

One way to minimize consumption of power and extending the life of your battery is to lower the brightness of your screen display. It is said that every level of brightness that is lowered is equal to almost ten minutes of battery life. The use of extra features such as ClearType fonts and other effects will also reduce the using up of power so you may want to opt out of these features when you want your battery to last longer. Cutting down on battery usage is simply a click away on the setting you have on your electronic notebook’s control panel.

Speaking of disabling features, you may want to do the same for unused devices. You may want to forego of the following or perhaps make sure that they are disabled when you are not using them; these are the Wi-Fi radio, the Ethernet adapter, the Bluetooth radio and the infrared transceiver to name a few. It may surprise you to know that turning one on could make a great deal of difference to your power use.

The lesser activity you have on your hard drive, the lesser the power consumption. A good way to minimize the frequency of the spins your hard drive makes to access data is make sure to make it a habit to defragment your hard drive on a regular basis. The process supports the drive in finding data as quickly as possible.

Also check on your Window’s paging file. The advice is to optimize this setting to the recommended 1.5 times of the capacity of the installed memory for both the initial and the maximum paging file size as this serves as the virtual memory if your RAM is already full.

Another consideration is your startup items. Each time Windows boots up, the startup items loads up the memory and as a result other applications that have been left open are then forwarded to the virtual memory. It follows then that the load of the CPU increases as well.

It is to be remembered that at the get go, your laptop’s battery should have been charged to 100 percent after the purchase; after which, the battery should have been discharged completely and charged fully to 100 percent again. This process is done to establish and set up the amount of electrical charge that your notebook’s battery can hold. A good advice is also to keep your batteries on a cool, dry place when not in use as high temperatures can damage them.

Ever been on a long flight, ready to hunker down and get some work done, only to discover that your notebook’s battery is plunging toward the red zone an hour after takeoff? So have we. That’s why we’ve gathered these simple tips that will preserve your notebook’s juice and boost your productivity. Read them now. You’ll thank yourself later.

1. Sleep Is GoodUse the operating system’s power-management features (in Windows XP, under Power Options in the Control Panel; or in Vista, under Mobile PC in the Control Panel) to set aggressive targets for when the display will go dark (say, after five minutes of inactivity) and when the machine will slip into sleep mode (no longer than ten minutes of inactivity). And if you can spare the extra time it takes for the machine to resume, set the PC to hibernate, not just sleep, when you close the lid.2. Don’t Be Performance HungryUnless you’re running high-order mathematical calculations on that long plane ride, chances are you don’t need all the processing power your CPU is capable of giving. So in Vista, select the “Power saver” power plan (found in the Control Panel, in the Power Options section) to extend battery life when on DC power, and leave the 3D gaming for when you’re near an AC outlet.3. Dim the LightsTurn down the brightness of the LCD panel (via the Function-key combo, or in the Control Panel’s Display Settings dialog) to the lowest level you can tolerate. The backlight sucks power like the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.4. Banish Non-Essential ComponentsWhen you aren’t actively using the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and IR radios, turn them off (via the hard switch, if your PC has it, or in the appropriate utility set), so they don’t trickle you dry trying to connect. Also, use USB-attached devices only when absolutely necessary. They aren’t getting their power from positive ions in the air, you know.5. Watch Scheduled TasksBe sure that your periodic virus scan is set to a time when you’re usually plugged in; running a full-disk virus check keeps the hard drive and CPU fully engaged for the better part of an hour.6. Lay Off the MultimediaA little in-flight music is nice while you construct that PowerPoint presentation, but streaming music from your hard drive (or playing a CD) means the disk (or disc) is always spinning. Dell inspiron battery7. Get More JuiceLet everyone else fight over that free AC outlet. Designed to sit underneath your notebook, the APC Universal Notebook Battery 70 ($ 149; http://www.apcc.com) can provide up to six hours of endurance using its lithium polymer technology. It comes with a variety of notebook tips and features selectable output voltages. The unit adds 1.8 pounds to your carry-on, but it’s better than having your laptop run out of gas midflight.

A laptop with a poor battery is more than a nuisance. It can ruin an important business presentation, or leave you stuck in the middle of a business teleconference. Unless you always have access to electrical power, having a poor battery can be very inconvenient. So how can you get more life out of your laptop battery? Is it just a matter of maintaining it, keeping it charged, or is it just the bane of laptop owners to have to replace their laptop batteries frequently?

For the most part, laptops use Lithium-Ion batteries. The life of a laptop battery is determined by the type of battery and its quality. It also depends on how the battery is cared for. Lithium-Ion batteries are less susceptible to the dreaded memory effect than previous types of rechargeable batteries. There are some important ways to take care of your laptop battery however. According to an article published by Tina Sieber, make use of, “Two things can damage Li-Ion batteries: deep discharges and heat. All of the following battery DOs and DON’Ts are derived from these two major factors.

Li-Ion Battery DOs

* partially discharge and recharge (no memory effect).* charge at lower voltage.* take out battery when laptop is running with AC power connected.* store battery in refrigerator with a 40-50% charge.* cycle the battery every few weeks or after every 30 partial charges.

Li-Ion Battery DON’Ts:

* deep discharge battery.* trickle charge.* ultra-fast charge.* leave fully charged battery in laptop while running on AC power (heat damage).* freeze battery.* buy old Li-Ion or spare batteries (Li-Ion batteries age, usually lasting an average of 2 years).”

In addition to taking care of your laptop battery, there are ways to set up your laptop so it uses the battery more efficiently. Tina Sieber has given us the following tips and steps to help get the most from your battery life.

Tina’s Tips:

1. Ship shape with a defragRegular defragmentation helps to arrange data more efficiently thus making the hard drive work less to access the data. The quicker the moving hard drive works lesser is the load placed on the battery. Thus, your batter can last longer. The effect is minimal, but this efficiency goes hand in glove with hard drive maintenance.

2. Kill the resource gobblersEnd the background processes that are not vital. Monitor the resource usage through a “Ctrl-Alt-Del’ which brings up the Windows Task Manager (in Windows). If you’re not on the internet, it is safe to shut down the immediate non-essential programs running in the taskbar like the antivirus and the firewall. Weed out unnecessary programs running as start-ups by launching the System Configuration Utility from Run “” Msconfig “” Tab: Startup. Uncheck the programs which you don’t want to launch and reboot the computer once.

3. Pause the scheduled tasksIt may be a defrag or a virus scan, but make sure it is scheduled for a time when you are near a power outlet. If not then nix them for the moment.

4. Unplug external devicesUSB devices are the biggest drainers of battery power. Unplug all external devices like an external mouse, PC cards, Wi-Fi, external speakers, Bluetooth and even an attached iPod.

5. Empty the CD/DVD DrivesEven if you don’t intend to use it, don’t leave any CD/DVDs as leftovers in the drives. A spinning drive sucks battery power like a sponge.

6. Go localDesist using the DVD/external drives while running on batteries. Shift the content to the hard drive or run using (free) virtual drives like Pismo File Mount or even Microsoft’s Virtual CD ROM Control Panel.

7. Lower the lightsThe LCD screen of a laptop is another huge power sink. Calibrate the brightness to the lowest level you can tolerate using the Function key toggles or using the Display Settings applet in the Control Panel.

8. Kill the soundsMute the speakers and try avoiding the use of multimedia software to maximize the Dell Inspiron 6400 battery life. Installed sound schemes also drain a battery perceptibly.

9. Rid the screensaverTo maximize battery life by a little, switch off the screensaver.

10. Visit Power OptionsGet familiar with power management through the “Power Options’ applet in the Control Panel. XP, Vista, and Windows 7 come with advanced power management features which shut off components like the monitor and/or the hard drive after specified intervals. This again depends on the chosen “Power Schemes’ (for XP) in the same applet. For instance in XP, “Max Battery’ under Power Schemes can be selected for maximum ACER BT.00903.014 battery optimization.

Similar settings can be found under “Mobile PC’ in the Control Panel of Vista.

11. Turn off the looksToday’s OS’s like Windows Vista come with features like “Aero Glass’ which are resource guzzlers. One can turn it off and go for the “Classic’ appearance which consumes less power. In Vista, click on Desktop – Preferences – View Colour – Appearance – Classic Appearance and Windows Basic graphical interface. In XP it’s – Display Properties – Theme – Windows Classic. Linux and even Macintosh are better optimized for longer battery life.

12. Hibernate is better than SleepIn the Stand By mode (or sleep mode), the computer turns of the hard drive and the display but memory remains active while the CPU slows down. This draws on the battery. In contrast, hibernation mode is better because the computer saves the current state and shuts itself down completely thus saving power.

13. Get the mostwork on the leastWorking on too many programs while on the APPLE A1045 battery is a sure fire power drainer. Keep use of graphic intensive applications to a minimum. Working on a spreadsheet consumes much less than playing your favorite game. To increase the life of the battery open just one or two programs concurrently.

14. Ram in more RAMAdequate RAM reduces the load on Virtual memory which by default resides on the hard drive. Though every extra bit of RAM uses up more power, it increases overall savings by short cutting access to the power hungry hard drive.

15. Keep it cleanA laptop with blocked air vents will generate more heat thus reducing the life of the battery. Clean the air vents regularly to keep operating temperatures low. Allow for open space around the vents for air to circulate freely. Keep the area around the laptop clean to avoid entry of dust.

16. Temperature is a silent killerUndue heat kills off a battery slowly but surely. Avoid leaving the laptop under direct sunlight or inside a closed car.

17. Avoid the memory effectA problem more for the older Ni-MH batteries than for Li-Ion batteries on which most modern laptops run. Memory effect relates to the loss of battery charge when they are repeatedly recharged after being only partially discharged. It can be prevented by discharging the battery fully and then completely recharging it. Li-Ion batteries on the oth

India has developed a 35-dollar touch-screen laptop, touted as the world’s cheapest, under a programme to provide connectivity to students in schools and universities The laptop unveiled by the country’s Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal is described by the government as a ‘low-cost computing and internet-access device.’ Sibal said his ministry had initiated talks with global companies about its manufacture and hoped to bring down the price to 10 dollars after the device was mass produced. ‘India had developed another low-cost computing device last year but it cost about 65 dollars. This is a different model … it looks like an Apple iPad,’ Mamta Verma, a ministry spokeswoman, said. The laptop has all the basic features, including a built-in keyboard, 2 GB of RAM memory, Wi-fi connectivity, USB ports and is powered by a 2-watt system for use in power-deficit areas. The seven- and nine-inch (18- and 23-centimetre) Linux-based touchscreen gadget, which can be run on solar-power, in addition to the battery-operated system, is likely to be introduced in higher-education institutions next year. The device was developed by research teams comprising students, professors and experts from the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Sciences. Guides to Buy Better Laptop Battery

One of the oldest batteries used in laptops is the NiCad, nothing but the Nickel Cadmium, which is very rarely used today. These Nickel Cadmium or the NiCad batteries is very heavier when compared to laptop batteries which are used to day. These NiCad batteries are prone to memory effect and they aren’t environment friendly as it contains heavy metals. Now battery manufactures have stopped manufacturing batteries of this type. The Nickel Metal Hydride or NiMH batteries are less likely to be prone to memory effects, but produces better power when compared to NiCad batteries. However most companies have stopped manufacturing NiMH batteries also.

The Lithium Ion or Li-Ion batteries is the most commonly used batteries used today in Laptops and also in other digital gadgets as Lithium Ion or Li-Ion batteries are compatible, provides excellent power and lesser in weight. Li-Ion batteries are very much useful in smaller and lighter devices such as digital cameras
, mobile phones and of course in laptops. Another biggest advantage of Lithium Ion batteries is that they do not suffer memory effect at all! However these batteries tend to lose its charge quickly towards the end of their life span. If this happens, then this is an indication, that the battery needs to be replaced.

Laptop Battery Buying Guide

A laptop battery provides a source of electrical energy that supplies needed power to your laptop. The laptop battery uses a combination of cells that are electrochemically active, which is to say, they naturally transmit electrons from one end of the laptop battery to the other, when those two ends are connected in a circuit. A laptop computer battery can be engineered to be highly portable, like a watch battery, or it can be built to withstand extremes in operating conditions, like a car battery.

Just like your car, your laptop computer battery lasts longer depending on how you “drive” your laptop. Modern laptop batteries tend to last three to five hours, depending on the power needs of the computer and the programs the user runs. Few things are as frustrating as when your laptop battery suddenly won’t charge fully or stops holding its charge for as long; when this happens, you’ll probably want to buy a replacement battery.

When buying a laptop battery, you will probably only have one or two choices that fit your computer. Choose the battery with the longest life available for your computer. There are several different kinds of laptop batteries; because the technologies of each are very different, a laptop must be designed specifically for the type of battery it uses. Most laptops are only designed to use one type of battery technology.
