Leica M9-P Review
His coverage of Mahatma Gandhi’s funeral in 1948 and the end point of the Chinese civil war in 1949 were to collect it an international recognition. He went on to document the end of the Kuomintang government and the first months of the Maoist People’s Republic. After China, he traveled to the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia that was), where he photographed the establishment of independence.

The book Images à la sauvette, (the English edition was the decisive moment) came out in 1952, was Cartier-Bresson photographs from the east and the west, with a cover drawn by Henri Matisse. The introduction of the photographers included aQuote of the 17th Century Cardinal de Retz: “There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment.” The acquisition of the crucial moments precisely what marks out his photography and gives it its immediacy and lasting appeal.
Cartier-Bresson went to some of the defining moments of 20th Century, including documenting the Spanish Civil War, the liberation of Paris in 1944, the student revolt in Paris in 1968, the Communist defeat of the Kuomintang in China and Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination.
At the same time he photographed some of the greatest century figures such as Camus, Picasso, Matisse and Colette. But he is probably best known for his portraits of ordinary life, the fleeting moments that remain from which the fabric of every day in memory.
He is most often used a Leica 35mm rangefinder camera with 50mm lenses, and often covered with metal housing of the camera with black tape to make it less noticeable.
In a fast black and white film, he managed to secretly take pictures, record events often without realizing his subjects. He composed his images in the viewfinder and would have most of his photographs printed full frame without cropping or any other manipulation. He worked only in black and white, despite a few unsuccessful attempts in color. He was blind for those who are his photographs as “art”, although many of his decisions and would today’s rigorous technique, which he had derived so much an artist as a photographer.
